How To Determine If Outsourcing Your Quality Process (Or A Part Of) Is Right For Your Company

Aug 10, 2014 8:00:00 PM

Outsourcing is a major decision.  It can be a strategic tool, especially for preparing FAI or AS9102 reports.

Outsourcing allows you to focus on the areas of your business that make you more productive and profitable.

To decide if outsourcing is the right for your business, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the function not central to generating profits or competitive success?
  • Is the function a routine one that wastes valuable time and energy?
  • Are you working with restricted data that must be handled by US citizens?
  • Is the function a need that's only temporary or that recurs in cycles?
  • Is it less expensive to have someone else do it than to do it in-house?
  • Can it be done cheaper in-house, but drains resources that could be better used elsewhere?
  • Are the skills required so specialized or the requirements constantly changing that it's impractical to have a regular employee do it?
  • Is this function something you or your employees don’t enjoy doing?

Outsourcing should be considered as an option for everything related to FAIs to AS9102s in your manufacturing quality process. Also consider training your employee on Quality Engineering best practices. Your employees are your greatest asset and an investment in their capabilities will positively impact your bottom line.

However, Companies should never outsource functions that are essential and customer facing, such as customer service for a small business that relies on building rapport with a loyal customer base.
